Study says 30 street gangs active in Baton Rouge

BATON ROUGE, LA (AP) - A recent study shows that East Baton Rouge Parish has at least 30 street gangs with more than 500 members. The study was conducted by researchers for the Baton Rouge Area Violence Elimination project.

Researchers found that a large number of killings during a two year period involved gang members. Forty-three percent of the murders that occurred in the Baton Rouge area between September 2010 and October 2012 were gang related.

Twelve percent of the murders that occurred during that time period were found to "likely" be gang-related, which is a classification used when the suspect or victim of the crime is a known gang member.  The classification is also used in cases where circumstances fit the criteria for gang violence.
