FRANKFORT, KY (FOX19) -

Several state employees were honored on Wednesday for saving the Commonwealth more than $5.4 million in one year.

Employees were recognized for their suggestions to improve productivity and services offered by the state of Kentucky. In total, 64 state workers were honored.

Their suggestions were submitted through the Kentucky Employee Suggestion System. Officials say their advice is expected to save more than $5.4 million in the first year, and a projected $52 million over five years.

"I salute today's honorees," said Madeline Abramson, wife of Lt. Gov. Jerry Abramson.  "These employees care about what they do and are mindful of their responsibilities as public servants. They realize that, no matter how streamlined our government becomes, we can continue to find ways to improve efficiency and serve the best interests of our citizens."

State officials say employee suggestions first evaluated at the cabinet level and, if implemented, are then sent to the Kentucky Employee Suggestion System Council for possible recommendation of a monetary award.
