Police chase kills bystander, suspect arrested

MONROE, MI (Toledo News Now) -

Monroe Police say a driver not involved in a chase was killed during the pursuit of a suspect early Tuesday afternoon.

Police say around 12:15 p.m., an officer was at the intersection of West Front Street and Toledo Street in Monroe when a car sped past the marked police vehicle driving erratically. The officer immediately turned on the cruiser's lights and began to chase the suspect.

The chase continued through the city of Monroe until police say the suspect ran a red light and hit a vehicle not involved in the chase. Police say a woman in the vehicle hit by the suspect was killed. Others, including the suspect, were injured in the accident. Police say the suspect was arrested at the scene. The suspect's name has not been released.     

Monroe City Police and Michigan State Police are investigating the crash.

South Dixie Highway/South Monroe Street is still closed in that area.
