GONZALES, LA (WAFB) - The Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office said there has been an arrest in a kidnapping and murder from 22 years ago.
Deputies said Jeannie Lavigne, 38, of St. Amant was kidnapped from her home on Dec. 15, 1990 and her body was found in a wooded area along side of Summerfield Road near Lake Villar in Port Vincent a few days later.
During the news conference Tuesday afternoon at the courthouse in Gonzales, Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office officials say Jeannie Lavigne's ex-husband's nephew, Kenneth Lavigne, was arrested.
Ascension Parish Deputies named 47-year-old Kenneth Lavigne as the suspect Monday. A DNA match through the State Police Crime Lab confirmed a 100 percent match with DNA found at the crime scene.
According to officials, Kenneth refused to give deputies a DNA sample so deputies went and got a DNA sample from Jeanie's son and matched the paternal side of his DNA. That DNA came back a positive match.
Deputies then got a search warrant for Kenneth and forced a DNA sample from him. Lavigne then fled town and investigators located him in McComb, MS where McComb police arrested him.
Kenneth Lavigne has been charged with aggravated rape, first degree murder and officials say they may add kidnapping to his list of charges. Kenneth Lavigne was 24 when Jeannie Lavigne was killed.
He is now in the custody of the Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office.
