PLAQUEMINE, LA (WAFB) -

A close friend of a former New Orleans Saints player Robert Meachem is behind a big push to get the Super Bowl champion back to the Big Easy.

The Plaquemine woman is petitioning the National Football League and the team. Some area business owners are lining up behind her.

Lori Rhymer was serving hot boiled crawfish off LA 1 on Monday, but these days, seafood isn't the only thing coming from her drive-thru window.

"Hey, I've got a petition going for Robert Meachem to bring him back to the New Orleans Saints," Rhymer told a customer.

Crawfish X-press is one of several businesses in Plaquemine soliciting customers to help get the former New Orleans wide receiver back in a black and gold uniform. Meachem was acquired by the San Diego Chargers as a free agent last year. But, Jennifer Kern believes he belongs in Louisiana.

"I was actually at his NFL Draft party in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and when they said New Orleans my husband and I went insane," Kern said.

Kern said her daughter, Lyndi, and Meachem's daughter, Ryli, are friends. Meachem and his wife, Shea, are expecting a baby boy. Kern said his family never really left Louisiana.

"She (Meachem's wife) is staying in St. Rose. She is going to have her child in New Orleans. She's due on the 27th, but hey, they might be there (at the hospital) right now," Kern said.

Meanwhile, Kern is working hard to convince fans to sign her petition. The pages are filling up. She's also got one online, along with a short video highlighting Meachem's greatest moments.

"He was the 'Hail Mary' at the end of the games. He was amazing. He's magical when he catches the ball," Kern explained.

Kern started her mission last week and already has nearly 200 signatures. Her goal is to get one million by the end of the year.

She said she is not sure how the process works or that Meachem will be able to leave San Diego without penalty, but she's hoping the petition will at least get the ball rolling.

"I told him (Meachem) I was doing this and he just smiled," Kern said.

Meachem was not available for comment.
