MAUMEE, OH (Toledo News Now) -

A community is still in mourning after a young woman is shot and killed in her car just before noon on Sunday in the parking lot of the Planet Fitness. It happened next to the Southland Shopping Center off Byrne Rd in south Toledo.

Police say the victim had called 911 around 11:30am, saying her boyfriend was following her and shooting at her as she tried to escape in her vehicle.

More 911 calls came in a short time later saying someone in a blue SUV had just shot a woman in her vehicle. When they arrived, Toledo Police found Kaitlin Gerber, 20, deceased from apparent gunshot wounds.

A short time after that Maumee Police found the shooting suspect, Jashua Perz, 29, barricaded in his home on Kirk St. in Maumee.

A multi-department team attempted to negotiate a surrender from Mr. Perz but was unable to.

"The individual indicated on several occasions his willingness to come out and surrender himself to the police officers. Of course, he never followed through," said Officer Jeff Siebenaler of the Maumee Police Department.

After 5 hours, just before 5pm, a SWAT team entered Mr. Perz's.

Mr. Perz was found dead inside from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
