It attacks the neuromuscular system and mobility, and on Saturday the community came together to help a former Sylvania Northview teacher battling ALS, otherwise known as Lou Gehrig's disease.

People at the event say Melissa Belcher made a lasting impact on the community, and this is their way of giving back.

Belcher was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig's disease a few years ago and it's progressed to the point where she needs extra help at home.

Her friends, family, former students and former coworkers met at the Moose Lodge in Sylvania on Saturday for a benefit dinner.

Organizers say they hope to raise $7,000 for Belcher though this event.
