It took 22 games for Raph Rhymes but the senior from Monroe, Louisiana finally hit his first homerun of the season in the LSU Tigers (20-2, 3-1) 9-4 win over Auburn (15-7, 0-4) Friday night.
Rhymes hit the three-run homer off Auburn lefty Daniel Kroger in the bottom of the first to give LSU the 3-0 lead, but Auburn closed the gap to 3-2.
Mason Katz continued his homerun tear as he hit his 10th homer of the year, which also came off Kroger in the third inning to give LSU the 5-2 lead.
Christian Ibarra added a two RBI single in the seventh to make it a 7-2 LSU lead. Alex Bregman went 3-4 and extends his hitting streak to 10 games.
LSU sophomore pitcher Aaron Nola (3-0) pitching into the seventh inning allowing nine hits, two earned runs, one walk and nine strikeouts. He had a shaky second and third inning allowing a combined four hits and two runs.
Joey Bourgeois had a key role in relief, pitching out of a bases-loaded jam in the eighth inning.
The Auburn Tigers outhit LSU 12-10.
Auburn and LSU will continue the series Saturday night at 6:30pm.
