Park Crossing High Zoning Proposal

About 280 ninth and tenth graders will soon occupy Park Crossing High School. But first, there's the decision of zoning those students.

"Having to rezone high schools becomes a lot more problematic so the plan that we're going to look at, we think, has the least impact on having to rezone kids," Thompson said.

This is the first proposed map, one that most school board members and Montgomery Public School Superintendent Barbara Thompson says makes the most sense, allows for growth and reflects the trend of the demographics moving east.

"I think it's a clean cut, so parents kind of know where the line is. Many of our school attendance zones are difficult to follow. I think this one is much easier," Thompson said.

This map includes the current four high schools. The superintendent says about 80 Lee students and 200 Jeff Davis students will go to the new high school initially. The proposed park crossing zone would be located in the eastern half of the county.

The line would run north from the Montgomery/Pike County line along Hobbie Road to Woodley Road, then northeast to troy highway, then northwest to Taylor Road, then north along McLemore Road to the northern Montgomery/Elmore county line.

The map includes all the subdivisions along Taylor Road, Sturbridge, Wynlakes, Arrowhead and a nearby apartment complex.

"[It] allows kids who are living in certain areas in neighborhoods to really go to school where they live and it allows the kids in our southern tier to know where they're going to school too," Thompson said.

Thompson says the 11th grade will be added in 2014 and senior in 2015.

On April 4th, board members will have a work session to further discuss this proposal and plans for the magnet programs and other schools like Jeff Davis and Carver, creating additional space there.

The board is expected to consider this zone proposal at it's April 23rd monthly meeting.

A public hearing on the proposed zone change will be held April 9th at 11:30 a.m. in the auditorium of central office.
