HAMMOND, LA (WAFB) - The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's Office reported the arrests of three sex offenders in violation of compliance laws.
Deputies recently arrested Joseph Verneuil, 65, of Ponchatoula; Lionall Bryant, 49, of Hammond; and Richard Jones, 46, of Independence. The blurred pictures of the suspects were sent to the media that way.
"Convicted sex offenders are required to perform registration obligations which include providing accurate personal information to the public," said Sheriff Daniel Edwards. "Sex offenders who refuse to comply with these obligations are a threat to public safety and are subject to arrest and prosecution. The hard work of the men and women who represent Tangipahoa Parish Sex Offender Task Force insures that Tangipahoa Parish families will continue to have the information about convicted sex offenders that they need to keep safe, and that sex offenders who refuse to comply with the law are brought to justice."
The sheriff's office said it established the Sex Offender Compliance Unit in January 2009 to monitor sex offenders in the parish. One year later, it expanded the compliance unit and established the Tangipahoa Parish Sex Offender Task Force. Its focus is to better manage and improve "all things" sex offender related.
Edwards said to date, the task force has arrested 323 sex offenders for non-compliance. He added the number of non-compliant sex offenders at any given time remains lower than it was before 2009.
