LIVINGSTON PARISH, LA (WAFB) -
The Livingston Parish school resource officer plan has been several years in the making but Thursday the proposed changes went from the drawing board to an official program.
"You'll be getting some really good deputies very confident in them," said Livingston Parish Sheriff Jason Ard.
Ard's comment received a final show of support from School Superintendent John Watson.
"Very excited for the opportunity for the relationships that are going to develop from this with our schools and our officers and as I mentioned that I've spoken with our principals and they are very much looking forward to this also," added Watson.
The motion to add four additional school resource officers passed by unanimous vote.
"This plan has been in place for quite some time but working up to this point tonight is a big accomplishment for us and the school system and Livingston Parish as a whole," said Ard.
The four officers will join the three existing school resource officers in the Parish and be funded at a cost of about $80,000 per officer. That will be a cost split by the School Board and the Sheriff's Office and one that Ard says is worth every penny.
"It's great to know we have public officials like this to make something happen and at the end of the day we are going to have a lot of parents happy that their kids are going to be a little safer in the school," added Ard.
According to Ard, the resource officer program will go into full motion July 1. Until then, the four designated officers will continue their training.
