HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

A simple question : Are you happy?

If you live in Alabama or Tennessee.. odds are you're not. At least, that's what the researchers at Gallup have concluded.

Their annual Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index report ranks Alabama as 45th in the U.S. when it comes to happiness. Tennessee was even lower, coming in at #47.

More than 350,000 Americans were given surveys asking them about their health, income, education, and other factors that contribute to one's satisfaction.

While Alabama and Tennessee come in low on the list, that doesn't necessarily mean that everyone is unhappy. The poll assigned each state a "Well-Being Index" number from 1-100, with 100 representing and ideal life.. It should surprise no one that Hawaii was the highest ranking state, but their WBI score was only 71.1. By contrast, Alabama's is 64.2, less than ten points lower.
