IREDELL COUNTY, NC (WBTV) -
Bond has been set for the Iredell County "Teacher of the Year" Dawn Kavanaugh. Her bond is set at $200,000. She has been charged with murdering her boyfriend Ronald Ketchum.
The alleged murder happened February 10, and she has been in jail since then.
"She is holding up remarkably well," Suspect's Attorney Lori Hamilton-DeWitt said. "I think the longer this goes on the more emotion we are going to see from her."
Suspect and victim lived together and had an on and off relationship. Police say Kavanaugh used a kitchen knife to stab Ketchum in the chest.
Prosecutors claim Kavanaugh thought about killing and murdering Ketchum, while Hamilton-DeWitt claims her client was the victim.
"This case is about domestic violence." Hamilton-DeWitt said.
The attorney says there is evidence Kavanaugh suffered and was too embarrassed to get help.
"There are other people that were involved," the attorney said. "That saw the consequences of the domestic violence that she disclosed to in part."
Kavanaugh taught at Lakeshore Middle School. Parents are not judging but are surprised the teacher of the year is behind bars.
"I know my daughter said it's against her personality," Lakeshore Middle school parent Carrie Vanvleed said.
No word when the teacher will be back in the court but the attorney hopes this will be a wake up call for others.
"It is my fear that fallout from prosecuting a case like this," Hamilton -DeWitt said. "Could be that the next victim hesitates just long enough and loses her life as a result of that hesitation."
The teacher's family is working on raising bond money to get their relative out of jail.
WBTV checked Ketchum's record. No arrests for domestic violence but he does have an arrest for DUI.
