NINETY SIX, SC (FOX Carolina) -
Greenwood County deputies said a man in a deer stand shot and killed a fellow hunter, thinking he was a wild hog.
Deputies were called about 8 a.m. Saturday to an area off of Carter Road near Ninety Six, where the victim's brother said he had been shot.
Deputies said they found the victim lying near a deer stand where 25-year-old Lucas Brickweg of Satellite Beach, FL, had been before the shooting.
Deputies said the victim's brother, who lives in the Upstate, told them Brickweg shot his brother, thinking he was a wild hog. The victim's other brother told deputies the same thing.
Greenwood County Coroner Sonny Cox identified the victim as 51-year-old Robert Iselin Jr., of Jacksonville, FL. He said he died from a gunshot wound to the torso.
The investigation was handed over to the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, who arrested and charged Brickweg with criminal use of a firearm and having no hunting license. DNR officials said the shooting was still under investigation.
DNR authorities said the friends were hunting in the daylight, not taking advantage of the new night-hunting law. The law just went into effect a couple of weeks ago, opening a season of night hunting for hogs, coyotes and armadillos.
Staff at the DNR said those species are extremely adaptive and have been multiplying and causing problems for farmers and families in South Carolina. In 2012, legislators voted to allow hunters more opportunities to hunt hogs, coyotes and armadillos into the night, with higher powered weaponry, and with night vision equipment.
George Harris, owner of Hunters Headquarters in Greenwood, said about the law: "It's safer and more effective, because trying to get rid of these nuisance critters is hard to do without scopes and spotlights."
Anyone with a hunters license can participate in the night hunts if they notify the Department of Natural Resources 48 hours before their hunt. Rules and regulations for the hunts, as well as the notification system, can be found at www.dnr.sc.gov/nighthunt.
