Local middle school students took home top honors on Saturday at the Ohio Mathcounts state competition in Columbus.
Out of the 190 competitors, four students have advanced to the national finals in Washington D.C.
Peter Zhu of Mason Middle school took home first place. Varun Srikanth of Hilliard Memorial Middle School, Sarah Wang of New Albany Middle School and Ju Hyuan Park of Greene Intermediate School finished second, third and fourth respectively.
Mason Middle School also finished first in the team competition. The winning team includes Peter Zhu, Jeffery Huang, Alex Ying and Kevin Yu. Sallie Carney, the Mason Middle School's coach, will coach the national team in May.
"Mathcounts gives young math students the tools for success," said president of the Engineers Foundation of Ohio, Joseph V. Warino in a press release. "Through it, students develop and hone their math skills. And the kids have fun with it."
