LANDRUM, SC (FOX Carolina) -
A burglar was shot by a homeowner during a break-in in Spartanburg County on Friday evening, according to deputies.
The shooting happened about 6:45 p.m. at 532 Hwy. 14 West near Landrum.
Master Deputy Kevin Bobo, of the Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office, said the suspect kicked in the locked back door of the home looking for his wife, who he found in the kitchen. Deputies said he then assaulted his wife and stormed upstairs.
Bobo said the suspect then kicked in a bedroom door where the homeowner had retreated behind his locked bedroom door and the homeowner shot the man multiple times in self-defense then called 911.
Bobo identified the suspect as Dakota Hester and said once he improves enough to be released from the hospital, he will be charged with burglary and criminal domestic violence. As of Saturday, deputies said Hester was in critical condition.
Bobo said it appears the homeowner was within his right to defend himself, and is not expected to face charges.
