MADISON COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -
The investigation continues into a substitute teacher carrying a weapon onto a Madison County school campus. WLBT confirmed an alternative school student in Canton rode home on a school bus after taking a gun from the teacher's jacket.
The substitute teacher told school administrators he didn't realize the gun was in his jacket. The 8th grade student allegedly stole the gun and took it home. Later another student told a teacher at the Madison County Academic Options Center what happened.
"Oh my goodness lets face it that was a poor decision. We were aware of it a week ago Friday March 1st. I'm really proud of how our alternative school principles and staff operated," said Madison County Superintendent of Education Dr. Ronnie McGehee. "Before this he's been an excellent sub for us. We had two very poor decisions and one good decision. We had a student come forward and say 'I know where it is, I know who has it and I'm telling you.'"
State law prohibits firearms on school campuses. The teacher has not been charged. The superintendent said the unidentified 8th grader will likely be expelled.
