(Toledo News Now) -
The Ohio State Highway Patrol says it saw a 3 percent increase in drunk driving arrests in 2012 compared to 2011. The reason: More drunks are being pulled over by troopers.
The Patrol's Toledo Post is emphasizing catching drunks. More checkpoints are being set up. Grants also help law enforcement agencies put more officers on the roadway through programs like Circle Toledo.
"We're focused on removing impaired drivers off the roadway. We have moved troopers around to be out during peak OVI hours. We're getting people out there where impaired drivers are," said Lt. William Bowers.
There is some grim news. Last year saw a 14 percent increase in alcohol-related crashes. A total of 431 people were killed and 7,000 injured.
Troopers are focusing on areas where the drunk driver will be found.
"We contact our statistical analysis unit in Columbus and they will tell us where the impaired driver crashes are happening. Then we can direct our troopers to work in that area," said Bowers.
In the meantime, troopers remind everyone that if they drink, don't drive, get a designated driver.
If you see a suspected drunk driver, you can help cut down the crashes by calling 911 or *677.
