Top seeded West St. John loses on last second basket

MONROE, LA (WAFB) - Vermilion Catholic's Kaylen Collins hit a game winning lay-up with 4.4 seconds left in the game and the Lady Eagles upset top seeded West St. John 54-52 in the Class 1A State Championship game.

West St. John had a chance to ice the game from the free throw line late in the contest, but  Jalyn Gordon missed two free throws that left the door open for Vermilion Catholic.

Gordon did finish with a game high 30 points on 11 of 20 shooting.

It was West St. John's first appearance in the State Championship game.

Katie Frith led the way for Vermilion Catholic with 25 points and 20 rebounds.

The win for Vermilion Catholic marks the second state title for the Lady Eagles in school history.
