PORT VINCENT, LA (WAFB) -
According to the owner of JJ's Automotive in Port Vincent, the fire that engulfed half his business Thursday afternoon started because a hay fire was not put out properly.
Thirty firefighters and 10 fire trucks responded to the blaze on Highway 16. It took 40 minutes to put out the fire.
The owner told District 4 Fire Chief James Wascom that he was burning hay behind the business and thought he put it out before he went to lunch. What was left of his hay fire caught the grass on fire and completely consumed one of two buildings that make up JJ's Automotive.
Fire Chief Wascom says he estimates the damage to total to be around $350,000.
There were no injuries in the fire and only one lane of Highway 16 is now open.
