LSU’s Ballard earns fifth SEC Freshman of the week honor

From LSU Sports

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – After producing back-to-back double-doubles in a pair of LSU wins last week, Danielle Ballard has been named Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week for a league-leading fifth time this season, the conference office announced on Monday.

Ballard, a native of Memphis, Tenn., became the first LSU freshman to produce back-to-back double-doubles since Sylvia Fowles did so in 2004-05. Ballard scored 14 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and collected five steals in a 76-42 win over Alabama last Thursday. The five steals gave her the LSU freshman single-season record, shattering Joyce Walker's mark of 86 set during the 1980-81 season.

Three days later, LSU extended its season-best and league-leading winning streak to six games with a convincing 67-52 win at No. 13 Texas A&M on Sunday. Once again, Ballard was the catalyst, scoring 15 points with a game-high 11 rebounds. She accounted for 12 points in the second half, including a clutch three that separated the score, while finishing with three steals.

Ballard enters this week's SEC Tournament with 90 steals on the year, which is third in LSU single-season history and just three shy of tying Marie Ferdinand's single-season record of 93 during the 1999-2000 season. Ballard is second nationally among all freshmen in steals.

For the season, Ballard is averaging 12.6 points, 6.7 rebounds and 3.1 steals per game. She leads all SEC players in steals and is 12th in the league in rebounding.

With her five SEC Freshman of the Week honors this season, Ballard has now won the award more times than any player in LSU history. LaSondra Barrett captured it four times during her freshman year of 2008-09. The SEC Freshman of the Week honor has been given weekly since the 2005-06 season.

Ballard and the Lady Tigers, the No. 6 seed in the SEC Tournament, face No. 11 seed Auburn at 7:30 p.m. CT Thursday in Duluth, Ga.
