Cincinnati (FOX19) - The Bengals have placed the franchise tag on Michael Johnson, almost ensuring the defensive end will be with the Bengals in 2013.
Johnson, who finished with a career best 11.5 sacks in 2012, will make in the range of $11 million dollars.
The Bengals now retain the rights to match any offer made to Johnson and can try to negotiate a longer contract until July 15th. If the Bengals don't match the offer, the team would get two first round compensatory picks in return.
"We are committed to re-signing Mike," Marvin Lewis said in a statement. "This move is part of a process to keep a promising young defense together."
The Bengals first announced the deal on Twitter.
