Friends and family mourn the loss of CCU sophomore Anthony Liddell

BENNETTSVILLE, SC (WMBF) - In the wake of the shooting death of Anthony Liddell, family members and friends mourn his loss in the tight-knit town of Bennettsville.

Liddell was a sophomore at Coastal Carolina University. He was majoring in Sports Medicine.

"I think it's a terrible loss," said Lavonda Helm. "It's a tragedy and my sorrow goes out to the family. I mean things like this happen all the time, but nobody deserves to lose their life when they are trying to better themselves."

Family members gathered at Liddell's grandmother's house to reflect and remember the life of the CCU Student. Liddell was the only son of Shelia Gillespie. Due to the amount of grief Gillespie is enduring, she was unable to talk on camera.

Liddell's aunt did give WMBF a hand-written statement from the family:

"The family would like to thank all for their interest and concern over our loss, our lives are forever changed and we respectfully request you afford us our privacy during this period of mourning."

Liddell grew up in Bennettsville and family members said that he was often at his grandmother's house.

"I knew him since he was little. In school, he used to be around at the store," said Rod Williams, a friend of Liddell's.
