Trooper injured in crash in critical but stable condition

FRANKLIN, OH (FOX19) -

An Ohio State Patrol Trooper has been upgraded to stable condition after he was struck by a car late Wednesday night.

Ohio State Highway Patrol says Brent Hill, 26, was with his field training officer, Mike Steele, 48, at the scene of a single vehicle crash on northbound I-75 just south of the SR 123 exit. Hill was standing outside of his vehicle when he was struck by a car that had lost control on the snowy roadway.

The two officers were initially investigating an accident involving Victoria Zaagman, 20, of West Chester. Police say Zaagman's vehicle went off the side of the roadway and struck the cement median wall. Neither Zaagman nor her passenger, 19-year-old Hanna Cox, were injured in the accident.

Police say Zaagman's blood-alcohol content was found to be .049. Zaagman was arrested for underage consumption and failure to maintain reasonable control of her vehicle.

While investigating the initial crash, a 1996 Buick Riviera driven by Andrew T. Combs, 22, of Vandalia, Ohio went off the left side of the roadway, sideswiped the patrol car and struck Hill and the vehicle that was involved in the first crash.

Hill was taken to Atrium Medical Center in Middletown before being transported to Miami Valley Trauma Center in Dayton. He is now in stable condition and is undergoing surgery for his leg. No one else was hurt.

Combs remained on the scene and provided a statement to investigators. He was released pending further investigation.

Hill went to Franklin High School and graduated in 2005.

"[He] always had a smile, one of those," hill's former math teacher Carol Snively recalled. " I feel like you hear that a lot, but he truly did and he was very polite and mannerly."

His ninth grade year Hill played basketball and soccer for Franklin High and Snively says his latest uniform fits him well.

"When I found out that he was a state trooper I thought to myself, I'm not surprised at all," she told FOX19. "I can completely see him in the uniform and everything."

Hill is a newly commissioned trooper assigned to the Lebanon post. He was awarded 'Top performance in firearms' during a graduation ceremony on Feb. 8, 2013. Each graduate spends their first 60 working days in a field-training period under the guidance of a veteran officer.
