SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -

Shreveport Police have arrested a student following accusations stemming from an alleged battery involving a Caddo Parish teacher earlier this week.

Detectives with the Shreveport Police Youth Bureau charged the youth with "battery of a school teacher" after authorities began investigating an incident that happened Tuesday.

On Tuesday, police charged Kasunda Barfield Daniels, 29, of Shreveport, with simple battery after she allegedly hit a student while at Westwood Elementary School.

The incident happened at about 2 p.m., shortly before police were called to the school to investigate reports that a teacher had struck a child.

Authorities made contact with Daniels who works as an In School Suspension coordinator at the school.

In an interview with Daniels, detectives gathered information indicating that Daniels allegedly slapped an 11-year-old student while monitoring students in the school's cafeteria.  Daniels was later issued a summons for simple battery.

The arrest of the juvenile came after detectives met with the child along with a concerned adult today at police headquarters. Information gathered during the investigation indicated that the juvenile had a role in the battery of a school official while at the school.

The student, who was issued a summons in lieu of being remanded to custody, was released to a concerned adult party.
