CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) -

In celebration of Black History Month, Cincinnati City Council has recognized prominent local African Americans at each of its Council meetings throughout February.

This year's final honoree will be recognized at Wednesday's 2 p.m. Council meeting in City Hall.

Ohio House Rep. Helen Rankin is the first and longest-serving African American woman in history.

"Rep. Rankin is one of Ohio's true legislative trailblazers, who made it possible for many African American women to realize their dreams of public service," councilwoman said Yvette Simpson.

After 16 years of public service, Rep. Rankin remained active in the community, and has received many honors and awards throughout her career from many organizations.
