CLARKSVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

A woman in Montgomery County is facing child abuse and neglect charges after police said the mother was upset that her 9-year-old's clothes were not ready for school.

Police responded around midnight to an apartment on Market Street after a neighbor called about a screaming child and a woman hitting her son.

Investigations said there was enough of a disturbance that a group started gathering outside of the apartment and was ready to enter to stop the woman.

When officers arrived, they said they could hear screaming and slapping coming from inside of the residence.

Officers went to the door and spoke with the woman, identified as Jessica Mires, 35, who they said was highly intoxicated and uncooperative.

Police then spoke with the woman's 9-year-old son and determined Mires was upset with the child's clothes.

Mires is accused of hitting the boy with an open hand on the back several times, which left red marks.

Medical staff examined the child at the scene, but he was not transported to a hospital.
