PLAQUEMINE, LA (WAFB) - Some local tax payers were furious after they said their refund checks, issued by a tax preparer in Plaquemine, bounced.
Doretha Tax Cut, like most tax preparation places, is popular this time of year. But the traffic jam that formed on Alexander Street outside of the Plaquemine business was anything but normal. According to the sign outside, Doretha's was closed but customers refused to leave.
Ernest Lee is one of dozens of customers who said the tax refund check they got from Doretha's bounced.
"That's bad business and I'm coming from Baton Rouge, and I've got bills. I'm about to lose my damn car. I filed on the sixth."
So many people showed up demanding an explanation, Iberville Parish sheriff's deputies were called to direct traffic. The one way street was packed with cars from one end to the next.
Deputies said they have been called to direct traffic outside of Doretha's during previous tax seasons but they have never seen a crowd like the one the witnessed on Friday.
Williams invited 9News inside to explain why her customers got bad checks.
"It was a printer error. I didn't notice the numbers were different because I took medication. When they came back I told them no problem. I printed the request form and they are downloading right now to be printed again," Williams said.
Customers filed back into the office to wait for their newly printed checks.
"I just got to print these out and they downloading 30 at a time. I want to make sure I print one at a time instead of putting a bunch at one time," Williams said.
Twenty minutes later, Doretha reopen her business.
Williams told 9News she is confident her customers will be able to cash the newly issued checks with no problems.
