MEMPHIS, IN (WAVE) - An intense fire forced a family out of its Clark County home early Friday morning.

The fire started just before 4 a.m. on Cronewood Lane in Memphis.

A portion of the brick facade is all that remains of the house, but all six people inside made it out safely.

"We had no shoes on. We just ran as fast as we could," said Trisha McAfee. "My son just had his underwear on."

Flames took over the house moments after a smoke detector alerted the family.

"Once we got to the hallway where the kitchen, living room is located -- it's all open --- there were flames on that side of the house," McAfee said.

McAfee's children, ages 12, 7 and 3, are fine after running into rain and 30 degree temperatures.

Firefighters arrived within minutes of the 3:50 a.m. 911 call. Crews had to haul in water tank trucks because there is no water source nearby.

"We're in a rural area. There's no hydrants out here," said Sellersburg Assistant Fire Chief John Cline. "We had to truck water in from a couple miles down the road."

Firefighters doused the flames for more than an hour-and-a-half. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
