An Arizona House committee has refused to approve a bill ending the ability of cities and towns to use photo radar and red light cameras.
Thursday's 4-2 vote in the House Transportation Committee rebuffed opponents who argued the electronic enforcement didn't save lives.
The majority instead said they wanted cities and towns to make their own decisions without the Legislature's interference.
The bill is the latest failed attempt to stop photo enforcement in the state.
A second bill making it harder to serve people with their tickets if they ignore a mailed citation notice was approved. But committee members said the proposed 8 a.m.-5 p.m. limit on service was too restrictive. Bill sponsor Rep. Steve Smith promised to amend the bill on the House floor to make the hours longer.
