BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -
A state representative has filed a bill for the upcoming legislative session that would restrict red light cameras.
The bill, filed by Rep. Paul Hollis, would only allow tickets to be issued to drivers whose vehicle is registered in the same area that uses the automated systems.
For example, a driver from Ascension Parish could not be given a ticket from a red light camera in Baton Rouge.
"The proliferation of these revenue-generating devices has done nothing to enhance public safety but has only allowed local governments and third-party administrators to profit," Hollis said. "Governments are not in existence to make money, but to provide essential services. Automated traffic enforcement is not a service; it's a tax."
The bill would also apply to speed-enforcement cameras.
