BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -
The University of Alabama says they have hired Mario Cristobal as the new offensive line coach for the Crimson Tide. He takes the place of Jeff Stoutland, who left to join the Philadelphia Eagles.
"We are very pleased to announce the addition of Mario Cristobal to our staff," said Alabama head coach Nick Saban. "He has an outstanding reputation as both a coach and a recruiter. He will be a great fit in our organization and I think our players will respond to his positive attitude and energy. This is a very important hire in terms of working with our offensive line and we feel fortunate that we were able to hire a coach of Mario's caliber. We want to welcome Mario and his family to the University of Alabama and we are excited to have them here."
Cristobal comes from the position of head coach at Florida International University where he led the Panthers to the 2010 Sun Belt Conference title and their first appearance in a bowl with a win in the Little Caesars Pizza Bowl. The Panthers returned to a bowl in 2011 with the Beef O'Brady's St. Petersburg Bowl. Cristobal joined Miami's staff in January of 2013 for a short stint as associate head coach and tight ends coach.
"I want to thank Coach Saban and everyone here at the University of Alabama for this incredible opportunity," said Cristobal.
In college, Cristobal played for Miami under coaches Jimmy Johnson and Dennis Erickson from '88 to '92. During that time, Miami won a pair of National Championships. He signed a free agent contract with the Denver Broncos in '94 before joining the Amsterdam Admirals of NFL Europe in '95 and '96.
Cristobal and his wife, Jessica, have two sons – Mario Jr. and Rocco.
