CLARKSVILLE, TN (WSMV) -
A Montgomery County paramedic was released from Vanderbilt Medical Center a day after a fire at an EMS station.
The blaze occurred at a station in the Hilltop community of Clarksville.
By the time it was over, one of the county's ambulances was destroyed, and now the county is shifting around its resources to ensure everyone stays safe.
EMS station 23 will remain closed indefinitely, and crews are working to determine exactly what caused the fire.
"It could have been a real tragedy. This broke out at 2 or 3 o'clock in the morning when they were asleep. It was smoke detectors that alerted them to the fire," said Montgomery County Commissioner Dalton Harrison.
Two EMTs were at the building when the fire occurred. The worker taken to the hospital was experiencing breathing problems.
"At this point we don't know exactly what the cause was. It's under investigation," said Montgomery County spokeswoman Elizabeth Black.
It didn't take long to extinguish the blaze once firefighters arrived, but the damage was extensive.
"We'll need to rebuild this one or look at another location to build. But we will have ambulances in this area. People will be covered by ambulance service," Harrison said.
Black said equipment from station 23 will be housed at station 27 while they work to make repairs.
"We have some spare ambulances and some floating ambulances, and we'll bring one of them into the fleet right now," she said.
