LAE hosts forum on voucher program

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Louisiana's voucher program, still in legal limbo, remains a polarizing topic among public school teachers and parents.

The Louisiana Association of Educators, which opposes vouchers, hosted a forum Monday night at the McKinley Community Center.

The event featured a panel of educators and was aimed at answering questions from public school teachers.

"If you're going to use an accountability system against us and you can't tell us anything about these schools they're going to with the voucher, then I beg to differ," said LAE President Joyce Haynes.

The Louisiana Black Alliance for Educational Options voiced their support  for the program at the discussion.

"I'm not able to afford private school, so this is an opportunity for him to have a better life, better education and something I wasn't able to do as a young child," said Ashley Ritchie, whose child is in the voucher program.

The LAE will continue its week-long open educator discussions Tuesday in Pineville.
