SALISBURY, NC (WBTV) -

Richard Cooley was supposed to spend the next 13-25 months behind bars. Instead, he died after jumping from the second-floor of the Rowan County Detention Center.

The 48-year-old from Woodleaf appeared in court Friday on charges of Possession of a Firearm by a Felon, DWI, and two counts Failure to Appear in Court for Felony Probation Violation.

Cooley pleaded guilty to the charges.

The judge sentenced Cooley to 13-25 months for Possession of a Firearm by a Felon, 120 days for DWI, and 5-6 months for each charge of Felony Probation Violation. The sentences were to run concurrently, so Cooley would have been behind bars for a maximum 25 months.

Cooley was transported to the Rowan County Detention Center after court, and booked immediately. He was being held there until the NC Department of Corrections could take him.

At about 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Cooley jumped from the second floor of the Rowan County Detention Center.

Surveillance video runs nonstop at the Detention Center. It shows Cooley landing headfirst on the first floor, near where an officer was stationed to monitor activity.

The nurse reached Cooley within three minutes. He was taken to Rowan Regional Medical Center for treatment, and later admitted to Baptist Hospital.

Just after noon Monday, the Rowan County Sheriff's Office learned Cooley had died.

No other information has yet been released.
