SMITH COUNTY, TX (KLTV) -
Smith County is combining forces with 300 other jurisdictions across Texas to participate in one of the largest joint warrant round-ups in the state.
If you have any kind of ticket from the county, you could be taken to Smith County jail beginning March 2nd.
Officers will begin visiting homes, neighborhoods, and places of work on that day to arrest anyone who has not settled their debt with the county.
If you have an outstanding fee, now is the time to pay it.
"It's always important to take action on a ticket of course when they get one but if they haven't taken care of it and don't take care of it immediately than someone will be coming and knocking on their door or coming to their place of business and initiating a warrant on them and taking them to the Smith County Jail. They can either make the payment then, or spend some time in Smith County Jail with us," says Justice of the Peace for precinct 5, Judge James Cowart.
Currently hundreds of people in the county collectively owe millions of dollars in unpaid court costs, fees, fines and citations.
Cowart says it's always important to take action when you get a citation.
"The only time they usually get picked up is if they get another traffic violation or if police have to come to their homes for disturbances. This way, we're going to go out and actively seek them," says Cowart.
Sheryl Keel says anyone with courts costs and fines has until March 2nd to arrange for payments before the warrant sweeps begin, for at least for this round.
"This is just the first phase that we're doing. We're going to try to do this two or three times a year," said Keel.
The warrant round up is for money owed to the county, not the city. However, if you owe money to both and the county picks you up, you will have to pay both fees to the county and the city or go to jail.
To check if you have unpaid court costs or fines you can visit www.smith-county.com, or call the Smith County Collections Department at 903-590-4620.
