HIGHLAND COUNTY, OH (FOX19) -
An old gas chamber was dismantled and removed from the Highland County dog pound on Saturday.
The chamber has not been used since 2009. However, it's existence has served as a reminder to staff and volunteers of the many dogs that had suffered and died inside of it.
Volunteers at the pound have long dreamed of removing the chamber. Many proposed putting a washer and dryer in it's place.
Today the Ohio Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) made this dream come true. Ohio SPCA officials were personally on hand to remove the chamber. The chamber was replaced with a washer and dryer donated by a Ohio SPCA supporter.
The Ohio SPCA has been working to end gassing and other inhumane practices in Ohio dog pounds for over a decade. The Ohio SPCA has been targeting the few remaining counties in which gas chambers are still used.
Ohio SPCA officials say that using gas chambers to euthanize animals can result in prolonged suffering and distress. According to the American Humane Association, it can take up to 25 minutes for an animal to die in a gas chamber.
