BULLOCH CO., GA (WTOC) -
A former trooper and a rescue worker were both flown to Savannah after getting stuck in soybeans Thursday in Bulloch County.
Authorities say it all started at about noon Thursday when former Georgia State Patrol trooper David Averitt was working on the bin at a farm off of Hwy. 46 and got stuck.
"It is like quicksand and then you can get stuck in there like it is concrete. You can't move and the pressure of the beans pressing down on you keeps you trapped," said Public Safety Director Ted Wynn.
With a ladder truck, crews lowered a rope and attached it to Averitt and then started slowly releasing the soybeans through small holes.
That's when the situation became more complicated for Bulloch County Firefighter Daryl Colson.
"He was in there shoveling some of the soybeans out of the way and got too close to one of the holes where the soybeans were draining and it sucked him into it," Wynn said.
Suddenly, a bad situation got worse. Both men were trapped. An additional helicopter was brought in just in case.
Nearly eight hours after the ordeal began, the men were finally freed through a hole crews cut at the base of the grain bin.
"Both of them were conscious and alert when they left here and we are flying them both to Savannah as a precaution," Wynn said.
The American Red Cross was at the scene to assist as well as the Georgia Search and Rescue out of Savannah.
