Catholics around the world celebrated Ash Wednesday, kicking off the 40 days of Lent.
In the Tri-State, the FOX19 Morning News was live downtown at Saint Francis Xavier Church.
For those pressed for time, Mt. Healthy United Methodist Church offered a 'drive thru Ash Wednesday' blessing, in addition to several other 'ashes on the go' events across the region.
The name Ash Wednesday comes from the practice of placing ashes on the foreheads of the faithful, as a sign of repentance and mourning to God.
Typically, the ashes are gathered from the burning of the palms from the previous year's Palm Sunday.
The season of Lent lasts six weeks, until Easter Sunday on March 31st.
