SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -
Tugboats are pulling a stranded cruise ship back to American waters. On board, more than 4,000 crew and passengers, including a Zwolle, Louisiana resident and several retired school teachers from Marshall, Texas.
A fire aboard the Carnival Triumph has left the entire ship without power, unable to move on its own. The ship left from Galveston harbor and it's been downhill since.
Passengers on board that have access to working cell phones have been calling the media, describing the awful conditions they are forced to live in.
"The smells are .... I can't even describe them. Our room is flooded. There is sewage, raw sewage, pretty bad. When you walk in the hallways, you have to cover your face. We don't have any masks for breathing. It's disgusting. It's the worst thing ever. We're sleeping on foam mattresses. Our room is so horrible," one passenger says.
There are no working toilets on the ship. And, without power, there is no refrigeration or stoves for cooking.
Passengers say the crew is leaving out any food that doesn't need to be cooked, such as fruit.
The ship is due to arrive under tow in Mobile, Alabama by Thursday.
