COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -
A 70-year-old man told police he was beaten by a group of men, at least one of whom was carrying a baseball bat.
Marilyn Chaney, the owner of a restaurant on 23rd Street in Columbus said the victim is a regular at her establishment. Chaney said she found the man lying in the street in front of her business just moments after he had been inside.
Witnesses said the victim had been arguing with a group of four or five men immediately before the attack. At least one of those men was carrying a baseball bat and swung it against the victim's head and knees. The victim had a disability before the attack that impaired his ability to walk.
The police report states he was robbed of his prescription medication and $8,000.00 cash. Chaney said she is skeptical about that figure.
"They were arguing and people who came in here saw they were out there fighting. He's always into it with somebody. This is not the first time he's been into it with someone, you know. What would he be doing with $8,000.00, with that kind of money on him?" said Chaney.
People in the neighborhood who are familiar with the victim believe he has no fixed address. Attempts to contact the victim were unsuccessful. No arrests have been made.
