CLEVELAND, OH -
19 Action News is uncovering more about a mother suspected of driving drunk with her baby in the front seat, leaving him paralyzed after a crash.
Cleveland accident investigators say the mom was drunk at nearly two-and-a-half times the legal limit, speeding at nearly three times the limit, and she had her baby buckled with a seatbelt for adults up front, even though she had a carseat in back.
The accident happened in early January on Cleveland's east side. A report shows officers were told mom had been drunk since Christmas.
A court document filed by Cuyahoga County social workers says the mother had a substance abuse problem. She had been through drug treatment and failed to stay sober.
The dad had also raised concerns. He was taking steps to try to get custody of the child months ago.
The child is now paralyzed from the neck down.
The police report also says the crash happened the day after the child took his first steps.
We're not naming the mother until the case goes to a grand jury. That is expected soon.
