MENTOR, OH (WOIO) -
Police Officers are warning residents to be aware of attempted identity thefts at local bank ATMs.
The Westlake Police Department recently arrested two people for attaching external card readers to ATMs in their city.
Katie O'Conner had no idea that the ATM she uses was on a list likely to be targeted by people who wanted to steal her identity, including the money in her bank account.
"That's scary to think about," said Katie.
The growing problems is known as ATM Skimming. A device, external card reader, is first placed over the ATM card insert. Then the unwitting victim swipes their credit card and the skimming device records their back account number to be used at a later date.
The suspects had a ledger with other bank targets.
Some of these targets were banks in Mentor. These banks have been checked and their managers notified. No suspicious activity was found.
Mentor Police say to be aware of anything appearing out of place when using an ATM. If unsure, notify the bank immediately or the police after hours.
Cops are handing the case over to federal authorities to investigate.
