PRATTVILLE, AL (WSFA) -
The High Point open air shopping district in Prattville may have turned the corner towards a brighter future.
Brittiany Holladay is weeks away from opening Republic Finance.
"It just seems the economy is getting better and this is a great location," said Holladay.
One business among four that will soon call High Point home.
"We have Chappy's Deli, Kinnican's, New York Diamond Company and Republic Finance coming," said Will Wilson, President of Jim Wilson & Associates in Montgomery. Beauty Nails and Spa is already open.
Today's announcements by Will Wilson mark what many hope will be the end of a really slow start. 5 years ago developers spent around $80 million building High Point. Of that figure Prattville invested $18 million only to see the center struggle mightily under the weight of a faltering economy. It was a time of falling stocks and failing financial institutions, now dubbed the Great Recession by many economists.
High Point was eventually sold at auction on the Elmore County Courthouse steps for $33 million a year and a half ago.
Wilson admitted luring businesses to High Point was not easy.
"It wasn't the property but the economy," said Wilson.
Brad Humphries says it just felt right to open New York Diamond Company's third location in Prattville.
"We saw others were signing up and that's what we were waiting for and decided to jump in," said Humphries.
The four businesses combined will bring more than 125 jobs to Prattville and an estimated $10 million dollars in sales to the city. Prattville mayor Bill Gillespie believes at the very least the city will see $1 million in additional sales tax revenues in the city treasury.
Even with today's encouraging economic news, there are still dozens of empty stores waiting to be filled.
A point not lost on Wilson.
"We are in negotiations with 5 national chains right now looking at High Point," said Wilson.
Will Wilson is predicting more growth ahead for High Point, more potential deals are in the works.
