SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -

As thousands of people watched the Krewe of Centaur parade, hundreds of Shreveport police officers patrolled the route to ensure safety.

More than 200 Shreveport police officers walked or drove this year's parade route.

"A lot of times fun turns into fights," says Cpl. Jermaine Barber.

Police say, with large amounts drinking at this event many of the arrest are connected with public intoxication and drunk driving.

Last year, police say less than 20 arrests were made during the parade, and this year, police expect even less.

"When you want to interrupt somebody else that is when we start getting concerned about the intoxication levels," says Barber.

A portion of the parade route is alcohol free, and maintains a family fun atmosphere, says Barber.

There are also two mobile police units along the route where police reports are made. There are also two checkpoints along the route where officer's breathalyze float drivers.

There will be extra police patrol on the streets even after the parade is over.
