ASSUMPTION PARISH, LA (WAFB) -

The search for a firefighter who went underwater in a river Wednesday and never resurfaced resumed Thursday morning.

Crews are looking for Jacob Lewis, 28, of Walker. He is a firefighter with the Baton Rouge Fire Department and a volunteer firefighter with the District 4 Fire Department in Livingston Parish.

The search got back under way around 8 a.m.

Officials said the Port Allen route of the Intracoastal Waterway at the Belle River Landing is closing to all river traffic for the dive team to search for Lewis. It will be closed until further notice.

The incident happened at the landing in Assumption Parish around 3 p.m. Wednesday.

The man's wife said they were loading their boat back on the trailer when she noticed the boat adrift. She told authorities she then spotted her husband in the water struggling to stay afloat.

"She exited and walked toward the back of the truck and that's when she seen her husband floating down the intracoastal just past the landing with him with his arms up telling her to call 911," said one official on the scene.

The woman added they had gone out around 1 p.m. to scout for areas to set crawfish traps and had just returned to the landing when the trouble started.

Agencies searching for Lewis:

Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries

Assumption Parish Sheriff's Office

East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office

Iberville Parish Sheriff's Office

Lafourche Parish Sheriff's Office

Wildlife and Fisheries agents searched for Lewis until about 11:30 p.m. Wednesday.
