LABADIEVILLE, LA (WAFB) -
A
32-year-old man was arrested on burglary charges after a church was broken into
Sunday night.
Hamid
Banisaaid of Labadieville is accused of breaking into St. Philomena Catholic
Church in Labadieville around 9:30 p.m.
The
Assumption Parish Sheriff's Office said the priest, who lives next to the
church, called 911 because the church bells were "going crazy."
The priest
told deputies the bells are normally played for funeral services and could only
be activated from inside.
According to investigators, the suspect was found in the church. He was drinking and had taken off his shoes.
Deputies added
he later told them he was getting ready to play the piano just before they
arrived and that he had turned on the church bells.
Officials said it looked as though Banissaid had forced the doors open.
Banissaid
was booked into the Assumption Parish Detention Center on a charge of simple
burglary of a religious building.
