PHOENIX (CBS5) -

Department of Public Safety officials have identified two women killed in a brutal crash in the HOV lane of Loop 202 freeway in Phoenix on Sunday night. Three others, including a toddler, suffered serious injuries.

A 19-year-old woman trying to direct traffic around the disabled SUV escaped injury when a Toyota pickup truck slammed into the back of the SUV about 8:30 p.m. near 44th Street, according to Bart Graves of DPS.

Josefina Holguin-Urquiza, 42, a passenger in the front seat, and Silvia Mistica Rivera Holguin, 19, were dead at the scene, Graves said.

Maireli Yanez-Holguin, 14, was taken to Phoenix Children's Hospital. Yesenia Yanez, 12, and the girl toddler were taken to Maricopa Medical Center. Maireli and Yesenia suffered serious injuries and the toddler had multiple life-threatening injuries, Graves said.

Flor Idalia Yanez-Holguin was driving the SUV westbound on the Loop 202 Red Mountain Freeway when a rear tire went flat. She stopped the SUV in the HOV lane, got out and started to direct traffic away from their truck.

The Toyota pickup truck driving by Oscar Lopez was westbound in the same lane when it struck the SUV, rolling and coming to rest on its roof, Graves said. Lopez, 30, of Litchfield Park, was treated and released from Banner Good Samaritan Hospital. Yanez-Holguin was not hurt.

Some of the victims had to be extricated from the wreckage, Graves said.

There was no information available and whether any charges were filed.
