TEMPE, AZ (CBS5) -
You can bet moviegoers in Tempe were startled when, in the final moments of a film about a plane crash, something fell from the sky into the crowded theater.
"Ceiling tiles just came crashing down on people," said witness Patty Talahongva.
Talahongva, her mom and dozens of other people were at Tempe Cinemas near McClintock and Elliot Roads on Saturday night for the 7:25 p.m. showing of the movie "Flight."
Talahongva said there had been two mop buckets blocking some of the rows in the theater. Someone apparently moved them as the film began and people took those seats. Two hours later on that rainy night, acoustic tiles wet from a leaky roof fell from the ceiling directly above.
"Looks like three tiles fell," Talahongva said while snapping photos of the debris. "People are hurt, they're giving refunds and there's damage from the rain."
A cleaning crew worked until early morning to clean up the mess. It was unclear at the time of publication whether Tempe Cinemas would open that theater Sunday.
