MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -
Sources within the Alabama state government are confirming to WSFA 12 News that a cyber-intrusion has targeted state government computer servers.
Alabama Governor Robert Bentley's office immediately directed questions to the Alabama Department of Homeland Security.
The Alabama Department of Homeland Security would only acknowledge that a cyber-intrusion of state government IT infrastructure took place and that a criminal investigation is under way.
The investigation is in its early stages, and sources say at this time there's no way of gauging exactly how large or small the attack was.
It wasn't immediately known if any records were compromised, and if so, which departments are affected.
Authorities are remaining vague regarding details of the investigation, nor is known if the state or federal government is taking the lead on the case.
This is not the first such attack on Alabama government computer systems. In February 2012 hackers with the online "hacktivist" group Anonymous claimed responsibility for breaking into state servers in response to newly passed illegal immigration legislation.
No claims of responsibilty have been made regarding Friday's confirmed intrusion.
WSFA 12 News is working to gather additional details on this developing story. We'll share information as it becomes available.
